Jonathan Tiersten, 1965-2026

Sad news has hit the world of independent horror, especially one of the greatest 80’s genre films made.

Jonathan Tiersten, who played Ricky Thomas, the cousin of Angela Baker, in the 1983 classic Sleepaway Camp, has passed away at the age of 60.

Tiersten was found in his home in New Jersey last week according to his brother. An investigation into his passing is currently underway. Tiersten was a successful actor and musician whose most known role is that of Ricky, the protective cousin on Felissa Rose‘s Angela.

Fun fact: Tiersten also “doubled” for co-star Felissa Rose when it came to Angela’s kills and can be seen wearing a wig in one particular scene.

Tiersten reprised the role alongside Rose and co-star Paul DeAngelo in the 2008 sequel Return to Sleepaway Camp. A remake, to be written and directed by original creator Robert Hiltzik and to be produced by Kenan Thompson, is currently in the works.

Aside from his acting work, Tiersten was also the leader of a local band called “Ten Tiers”.

Indie World Cinema sends its condolences to the family of Jonathan Tiersten and to the cast and crew of the original Sleepaway Camp.

Here’s an interview with Jonathan talking about his return to the franchise from YouTuber Jeff Sleepaway.
