This adult animated feature is one of the wildest films you will see this year…guaranteed!
In 1981, Fort Montana was an island located near the Bermuda Triangle was the location for the U.S.government to perform experiments in an attempt to create a new brand of soldier. However, after so many failed experiments resulted in the subjects being transformed into aquatic creature-human hybrids, the island was ordered to be both evacuated and blown up. However, the island remained intact with the experiments still residing there.
When Duke, a hapless loser who owes a local drug lord $100,000, he evades them when he falls off their yacht and ends up on Fort Montana, he meets the group of experiments and the seemingly normal Dyanna. Duke decides to find a way to earn back the money he owes. He decides to turn the island into a tourist resort with the new name “Isla Monstro”. This attracts the government, who decide to infiltrate and ensure that the island, this time, is gone once and for all.
From the minds of Steven Shea and James Schrader comes this film that can be described as The Island of Dr. Moreau meets Club Paradise. This is a wild and wacky adult animated comedy that has one of the most insane cast of characters in a movie. From the aquatic creature-human hybrids to Austrian drug lords thinking they’re Cuban because of Scarface to an unhinged government official, this movie basically has it all.
Co-writer Schrader voices Duke, the hapless loser who is looking for a way to avoid getting killed by “El Feo”, a local drug lord because he owes money to him. When he arrives on Fort Montana, he is shocked at first but soon gets along with the creatures living on the island. They include Sam, voiced by Harland Williams; Reggies, voiced by James Marsters; Moon, voiced by Spenser Grammer; Midnight, voiced by LeeAnna Vamp; and Jerry; voiced by Christopher Sabat. This is a fun group whose backstories are revealed briefly as we learned they were actually humans who were interested in becoming “super soldiers” due to various circumstances.
Dyanna, voiced by Juliana Harkavy, seems to be the only normal one aside from Duke. However, her resemblance may give us a clue to why she is the only normal-looking one on the island alongside the creatures. Yes, there are some wild references to certain characters here. And if that’s not crazy enough, we see a potential romance between two of the creatures, plus the mere fact that since the island has been abandoned since 1981, the inhabitants are still stuck in that 1980s mindset.
The film’s supporting characters are quite a hoot, including the U.S. President, hilariously voiced by Barry Bostwick and the unhinged Colonel Ferguson, voiced by Futurama’s John DiMaggio, who is hellbent on ensuring the island ends up meeting its fate. The one tourist that actually makes the most impact on the film is Lacy, voiced by Indie World Cinema Hall of Famer Sarah French, as we see her and her Andrew Tate-resembling boyfriend, which leads to a shocking scene where we see why French is definitely one of this generation’s underrated Screen Queens.
Then there’s Doctor Oculus, voiced by Maurice LaMarche, who is not an aquatic-human hybrid, but rather a giant floating eye and a mad scientist. He’s so far out of there, he mistakes the anagram “GTFO” as “grab the future Oculus”. But that’s nothing compared to two scenes involving hanky panky, including a human couple in a subterfuge that ends disastrously and an extended love scene between two creatures that has one of the funniest love themes I’ve ever heard. Seriously, you cannot unsee it! And this is all before the third act of the film, where all Hell breaks loose.
Isla Monstro definitely is in my current top 10 films of 2026! It’s wild, wacky, insane, and fun all wrapped up in a nice little cargo box with a bow!
