A slasher mystery with a twist is loads of fun and keeps you on your toes, from the director of the wild horror-comedy Slay and the writer of the 2021 award-winning Slumber Party Massacre reboot. 

Five weeks ago, Nora, a sister at Sigma House, was drunk and saw the sorority’s president, Sarah, murdered at the hands of a masked killer. Accused of the crime was Sarah’s unhinged boyfriend, James. However, he has been released on bail, and Nora, who was drunk when the murder happened, is deemed a liability. Nora is designated and forced to be the “sober sister” for an upcoming event, much to her own chagrin. 

Nora soon realizes something doesn’t add up about the murder. She soon discovers that not only has the masked killer returned to cause more chaos, but Nora could also be the only one to solve it. The only way Nora can decipher the crime is she goes back to getting drunk. As her fellow sorority sisters slowly get picked off one by one, and the fact that they are not happy that “Drunk Nora” is back, they soon realize Nora’s alcoholic state could be the key in figuring out a way to find the murderer and stop them once and for all. 

This Tubi original film takes the slasher genre and adds an interesting twist in the form of the protagonist getting drunk to remember and decipher who is responsible for the death of the sorority president. The film, written by Slumber Party Massacre reboot scripter Suzanne Keilly, feels like a blend of a mystery, a slasher, and that scene in Beerfest where the guys had to get so drunk to remember the secret location of the Beerfest tournament to compete against the German team. And it works!

Siena Agudong, soon to be seen as Sue Snell in Amazon’s Carrie reimagining, is hilarious (in a good way) as Nora, who can be seen as the campus drunk. We learn the movie starts with the death of Sarah, played by Slumber Party Massacre’s Frances Sholto-Douglas. Five weeks later is where we are treated to the idea of Nora getting drunk and we see her inner conscience in a nicely shot red filter as we see Sarah’s ghost guiding Nora, even when her fellow sisters find her to be quite insane. 

The kills are fun to watch, as they go a little over the top and in one funny scene, a miscommunication leads to Nora confronting two rival sorority sisters who are dressed as “final girls” drenched in blood. The killer looks pretty cool, sporting a college hoodie, a boy mask, and a ballcap. However, one of the funniest things about the film, in the spirit of Billy Madison, is that when Nora is also drunk, she imagines the sorority mascot, a stuffed animal named Billy Snuggles, coming to life in the form of Match’s Jacques Adriaanse in a costume, acting as another guide for our heroine. 

Buzzkill blends elements of The House on Sorority Row, Beerfest, and Billy Madison all in a nicely wrapped little package, greatly executed by Jem Garrard with Suzanne Keilly’s script nicely done with Siena Agudong in a fun protagonist role. Definitely one to check out.
