In his final film performance, legendary Power Rangers star Jason David Frank delivers a powerful send-off, aided by scene-stealing Aaron Schoenke.
Three years ago, Virtuo City was the battleground between a being known as Ashtagor and the White Dragon, a mysterious hero. However, as the battle ended, the crystal that gave the White Dragon its powers had been broken. The White Dragon has been identified as treasure hunter Erik Reed and he has taken the fall for 1,263 deaths. On the 3rd anniversary of what is known as “Dark Day”, Reed is forced out of hiding to prove his innocence. However, it will not be easy.
Jai Katua, the head of a pharmaceutical company, has acquired a broken piece of the crystal. He has been seething with revenge as his wife, Vanessa, and their child were killed on Dark Day. As Jai learns Erik has returned, he intends to use the crystal to become the evil Dragon Prime. Meanwhile, with the help of his friends Iris and Connor, Erik must traverse the world to find the final recharging pit to once again become the White Dragon and make everything right.
The shocking death of Jason David Frank in 2022 sent shockwaves to fans of the Power Rangers franchise everywhere. A beloved figure who stood out to appear in the iconic role of Tommy Oliver in more than one PR series, it was he who collaborated with Bat in the Sun co-founder Aaron Schoenke on this film’s original story. It is meant to be a “what if Power Rangers went dark,” as in a darker tone than the 2017 Lionsgate reimagining. The film, released nearly four years after Frank’s passing, feels like a proper send-off to the icon.
Jason Frank delves into the role of Erik Reed as he struggles to deal with the fact that he’s to blame for the deaths of over a thousand people. He was once the hero of Virtuo City, but he has been set up to be the fall guy when the mysterious Ashtagor proves to be too much for him and breaks the power crystal in two. We learn in a flashback that it was his own father, a master thief, who hid the crystal. In the role of his father is another legend we lost, Michael Madsen. The two have a tense conversation in prison about their relationship, and we also see how the events have affected his wife, played by another Power Rangers alum, Lost Galaxy’s Cerina Vincent, and their daughter Ashley, played by Frank’s real-life daughter, Jenna Rae Frank.
While we see Frank’s Erik Reed as a broken hero who is desperate to redeem himself, there is one actor who virtually steals every scene he appears in. And that is none other than Aaron Schoenke himself as Jai Katua, the pharmaceutical head who seeks to avenge the loss of hiis wife and child. It should be mentioned we get Jai’s backstory as well with another Power Rangers alum, Megaforce/Super Megaforce’s Ciara Hanna, plays Jai’s wife Vanessa.
There is one more Power Rangers alum in the film. That’s none other than Jason Faunt of Time Force as Connor, Erik’s closest ally, along with Rachele Brooke Smith as Erik’s other best friend, Iris. Smith once again shows why she is a combination of beauty and badassery, while Faunt plays the optimistic sidekick. Arrow’s David Ramsey plays the Mayor, who wants justice against Erik Reed, while Mark Dacascos plays a monk, Xang, who may be the key to Reed once again gaining the power he needs to become the White Dragon. I was surprised to see Amy Johnston as a cop working for the one and only Ashtagor. She gets a fight scene against Frank and once again proves why she is so underrated. Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor brings some comic relief to the film as hologram U.R.I.
Legend of the White Dragon is a proper send-off to the legendary Jason David Frank as well as Michael Madsen. Frank really brings a redemption arc that is stronger than his first stint on Power Rangers. Aaron Schoenke really makes a good villain actor in one of his best roles since the short film Batman: Dying is Easy, where he made one hell of a Joker. The action is fun and the cast does a great job supporting Jason David Frank in this final film for the Power Ranger icon.
